When an teenage makes club a historic moment in a key European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.

"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to play for either country at the highest level.

Under international regulations, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Lamine opted for Spain, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the two-one win at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the team chase future success.

Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the win at Manchester.
