The Trump movement's most illuminating and characteristic instances – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. During the period of several weeks, the American president commenced revealing everyone his plans for an ornate dance hall two times larger compared to the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the East Wing to construct it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and increasing, and this week an analysis forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have dared – truly, no other president would have imagined – solo demolishing large sections of the White House in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, the majority of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.
We went from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' to 'the humble will perish from cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the leader attempt to overturn the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – among senior generations a near majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they converted a persona of love into a figure of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades instead of months, however it is still disturbing in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior that I grew up with, as conceptually the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and because the fastest-growing cadre among Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him since they are non-believers or uncertain individuals or nones. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing too.
The obvious and clear truth that the Jesus in biblical accounts requests a type of profound affection focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a controversial faith: engaging for the masses, but due to its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Best Within Us
So I have been inspired to observe the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to help build the movement that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags throughout each rally and requests to the finest aspects of American history.

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is most protected by reference to that which renders it unique and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus. In all circumstances does it mean acting as if the worst regarding America and Christianity never occurred; it means both humility and belief, a mixture that committed American Christians ought to accept.
