Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such drugs should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
