Nutrition Assistance Expected to Cease for Tens of Millions During Ongoing Government Closure

USDA officials stated recently that SNAP funds through a critical national support systems will not be distributed in November amid the persistent government funding lapse.

Closure Continues Through Its Third Week

The funding lapse was in three and a half weeks when the announcement was made, which followed appeals by more than two hundred Congressional Democrats asking agriculture officials to tap into reserve accounts to cover November's food assistance.

“The reality is, the well has run dry,” the USDA stated. “At this time, assistance will not be provided” starting next month.

Millions Affected

Over 40 million Americans count on these food benefits, as reported by official statistics. Some regions, including New Mexico, dependence on the program reaches one-fifth of the population.

Internal communications seen by journalists revealed that the department chose not to tap reserve funds for November food benefits.

Legislative Deadlock

Lawmakers from both parties remain deadlocked about the way to finance and restart the federal government.

Remarks from the head of a prominent policy organization suggested that the administration had opportunities to act sooner to avoid interruption in payments.

“They had the ability and responsibility acted weeks ago to be prepared to access these resources,” the remarks concluded. “Instead, it may choose not to use them for potential political benefit” as Republicans seek to pressure Senate Democrats to approve a funding package that would resume the federal government.

States Prepare

State leaders from two affected states declared states of emergency this week to allocate funds for hunger relief in anticipation of food benefits expiring in November.
