New Year Celebrants Told to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Forecast Across the UK
Meteorologists have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Go Ahead Amid Warnings
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay festivities are planned to proceed, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," said the Met Office.
Displays Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be low, meaning additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.
In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

- People have been urged to plan for delays for travel on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on the transport network.
Temperatures Expected to Plummet Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Health Advisories Activated
Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities explained this meant the weather was likely to lead to significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
The guidance for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely essential.
