LA Experiences Record-Breaking Heat Only Days Following Severe Winter Weather.
Following a week of heavy downpours that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, LA is now grappling with unseasonably warm temperatures for the end of February.
All-Time High Heat
On Friday midday, the temperature reached 91°F (33°C) in central LA, according to meteorologists. This easily surpasses the old record for this date, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was recorded just last year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were highlighted on official maps for the region.
Safety Advisories
Authorities issued a warning that Friday's conditions posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for those at risk. Their recommendations suggested:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Never leaving children or pets unattended in a hot car.
A Dramatic Shift
This sharp rise in heat follows closely after a powerful winter storm that struck the area recently. That event delivered high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to mountainous regions, triggering mudslide risks for many residents.
Tragically, the severe weather also triggered a large avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
Looking ahead a cooldown is expected. The heat were predicted to fall to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in the city by late Friday.
Other locales that reached ninety degrees were Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Elsewhere, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were projected to experience the upper eighties.
For the weekend, central Los Angeles can anticipate temperatures in the 80s, with cooler weather on tap for the week ahead.
