Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at 81 Years Old

Global audiences mourns the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born reggae singer and actor whose distinctive vocal talent was instrumental in popularizing the reggae genre across the globe. He has died at the age of eighty-one.

“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” wrote his spouse Latifa Chambers on social media. “I am grateful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their children, their son and daughter.

Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hit songs including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat musical style and uplifting spirit brought him a large and loyal fanbase.

Beyond his musical achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a role that was highly acclaimed and is considered a landmark of Jamaican cinema.

Jimmy Cliff was one of just a handful of artists, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
