US air traffic controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official informed a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to delays caused by weather and other issues.

More than 3,000 US flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy said he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their worries directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, can I find another source of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

The secretary added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields said flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the shutdown started.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would reduce the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.

"I need my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel stretching upward to the city of Oakland.

The FAA notice was issued at 8:45 AM local time on the weekend. Many flights were back on schedule by midday.

Travel at Newark Airport, however, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airfield in the US, could experience problems from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The FAA advised passengers in the state to consult carriers about revised flight schedules.

The issue precedes the third match of the championship, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving break, among the peak periods to travel by air in the United States.

Strain on US air travel helped end a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the halt had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including pilot training.

It prompted several air traffic controllers to stay home on the same day on 25 January 2019, briefly halting movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, the former president, who at the time was in his initial presidency as leader, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the federal closure after 35 days.
