Fall Classic Game 7 Attracts Over 50 Million Viewers In the US, Canadian and Japan Markets.

The exciting 11-inning matchup that saw the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Blue Jays 5-4 drew a aggregate 51M viewers in the United States, Canada, and Japanese territories. MLB announced this represents the highest-rated Fall Classic Game 7 since the 1991 edition contest between the Twins and Atlanta Braves.

Broadcast Viewership Breakdown

Last Saturday’s memorable contest drew 27.33M viewers on Fox Sports channels, its Spanish-language channel and Fox’s digital services. According to Nielsen, it was the second highest-rated program of the week.

It also stands as the most-watched World Series game after the 2017 edition final game involving the Dodgers and Houston Astros, which averaged over 29 million. This represents a sixteen percent improvement over the previous Game 7 featuring the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros, which attracted 23.19M.

In the weekly rankings, Game 6 ranked 4th, the fourth game was 7th, Game 5 was eighth, and the third game finished in 13th place.

Global Viewership Numbers

In the Canadian market, the climactic game recorded over 11 million viewers on the Sportsnet network and the French-language TVA Sports channel. This was the most-watched English-language broadcast in the country after the 2010 Winter Olympics.

In Japan, where the deciding contest started at 9 p.m. local time, it drew 12M. This followed last Friday’s Game 6 – in which World Series MVP Yamamoto allowed a single run in six frames – averaged 13.1M viewers, making it the most-watched World Series game on a single network in the country.

Series Totals and Trends

The entire seven-game series drew 15.71M audience members on the Fox network, a two percent increase from the previous year’s Dodgers versus Yankees matchup. This marks the initial instance after 2015 and ‘16 that the Fall Classic has seen viewership growth for two straight seasons.

Counting the opening game broadcast on the Univision network, the complete American average was over 16 million. The total World Series average in Japan was 9.7 million and 8.1 million in the Canadian market.

The full MLB Postseason on Fox, FS1 and FS2 drew 8.09M viewers, an eight percent rise over last year and the network’s best playoff ratings after the 2017 season.

Major League Baseball reported that the World Series was broadcast in 203 nations and regions by 44 media partners in sixteen different tongues.
